答:選擇一當然是最簡潔的說法,但假如要特別提醒或告訴人家會議將於哪一天舉行,則選擇三較好。至於選擇二,文法有點問題。
根據文法,名詞之後用過去分詞(past participle,即ed形式動詞),是說現在或過去的事;名詞之後用「to
be +過去分詞」,則是說未來的事,例如:(1)A penny
saved(= that is saved)is a
penny earned(= that is earned)(省一便士,等於掙一便士)。(2)The issue was discussed at the meeting held (= that was
held) last Monday(這個問題,上星期一的會議上討論過)。(3)The
candidates to be interviewed(= who are to be
interviewed)are all women(將要面試的應徵者,全部是女人)。讀者哪一句,說未來的事,不宜用選擇二。
問:香港稅務局叫Inland
Revenue Department,但inland應是指「內地」,和稅務有什麼關係?
答:Inland除了指「內地的」,也可指「國內的」,例如inland towns是「不近海岸的內地城市」,inland
trade是「國內貿易」。國家的收入(revenue),來自國內的,就叫inland
revenue,在美國則叫internal revenue,取義相同。Inland和internal兩字本身,則當然和稅務無關。
