問:我的上司回覆「徵求意見」電郵,說Please be informed that in fact our comments were
provided on 11 March(我們的意見其實已於三月十一日奉上,謹此通知)。這一句着重的應是「意見已提供」而不是「意見於某一天提供」,were改為have been會不會較好?
答:由於句子言明過去某一個時間,動詞嚴格而言不得用現在完成式have been provided。而句子說明日期,有助對方查閱當天的郵件,所以不宜畧去日期而改用現在完成式動詞:Please
be informed that our comments have already been provided。
讀者那位上司的句子,文法正確,但用被動語態(passive voice)Please be
informed起句,讀起來不自然,語氣也嫌冷漠;而in fact兩字,似乎是要辯白,有點奇怪,不如畧去。全句我會改寫如下:Please
note that our comments were already provided on 11 March。
最後不妨談談的,是有時你的確會讀到一些句子旣說明過去某個時間,又用現在完成式動詞。牛津出版社的Practical English Usage就抄錄了以下實例:A
24-year-old soldier has been killed in a road accident last night(昨晚發生車禍,一名二十四歲士兵死亡)。不過,這樣的句子一般視為錯誤,Practical English Usage作者也說讀者不宜學習:Learners should avoid them。
