問： State、 nation、 country都是指「國家」，三字意思有什麼分別？
答： Country說的國家，着重國土； nation說的國家，着重國民； state說的國家，則着重政權。所以「多山丘的國家」，叫
a mountainous country；「民族主義」，叫 nationalism；「國宴」則叫 a state banquet。請再看以下例子：(1)New
Zealand is a country made up of two large islands（新西蘭這個國家，由兩大島嶼組成）。(2)Britain
is a nation of football lovers（英國是個酷愛足球的國家）。(3)He
advocates state ownership of the railway（他主張鐵路國有）。
不過， country和 nation有時可以通用，例如： Indonesia is one of the poorer nations/ countries
of the world（印尼是個較貧窮的國家）。
問： Minimal和 minimum兩字都是形容詞，也都是「最少」的意思，用法有分別嗎？
答：說「按規定的最低限度」，習慣用 minimum一字，不用
minimal，例如 a minimum wage（最低工資），
a minimum charge（最低收費）、 a minimum age（最低年齡的限制）等。
Minimal則往往只是「極少」、「微不足道」的意思，例如：(1)He had a
minimal interest in music（他對音樂沒有什麼興趣）。(2)This is a
meeting of minimal importance（這個會議毫不重要）。這兩句的 minimal，都不宜用 minimum取代。
