問：敝校英文科主任所發通告有strong in English（長於英文）這說法，同事問兩位外籍教師，都說in應改為at，對嗎？
答：不對。說「擅長」，英文是good at或strong in / on，例如：The
university library is particularly strong in / on the humanities（這家大學圖書館所藏文科典籍特別豐富）。（2）Students must be
good at English（學生必須擅長英文）。
以下兩句，一出自一九七九年版Macmillan Contemporary Dictionary，一出自二零零八年版Merriam-Webster's
Advanced Learner's Dictionary，可供參考：（1）He
is strong in science（他擅長理科）。（2）She's
strong on vocabulary but not grammar（她識字很多，文法卻不怎麼好）。
問：指南針集團公司出版的一本Phrasal Verb（動詞片語）有以下例句：This house serves for
our needs perfectly。我照寫，英文教師卻把serve之後的for刪去。Serve和serve for有什麼分別？
答：說「適合……的要求」，serve之後一般不用for，例如Macmillan
Contemporary Dictionary有以下一句：The agreement no longer
serves our needs（這協議不再符合我們需求）。讀者示下那一句，應是據Longman Dictionary
of Phrasal Verbs改寫的，原句如下：The house will serve for my
simple needs, but will it serve for the whole family？（這房子符合我簡單的需要，但夠全家使用嗎？）這for有「就我簡單的需要而言」、「就我全家而言」含義，但這用法並不常見。
